Using the Rich Content Editor (RCE) in Canvas

The Rich Content Editor (RCE) is the main text editing tool in Canvas. It is used to create and format content across your module, including pages, assignments, discussions, announcements, and quizzes. The RCE allows you to add text, media, links, files, and interactive elements without needing technical skills.

The Rich Content Editor appears anywhere you can add or edit content in Canvas, such as:
  • Pages
  • Assignments
  • Discussions
  • Announcements
  • Quiz instructions
Although the content type may differ, the editor functions in the same way throughout the module.

Formatting Text and Content

The RCE includes standard formatting tools that allow you to:
  • Apply headings, bold, italics, and lists
  • Adjust text alignment and indentation
  • Insert tables for structured information
  • Use headings to create accessible, well-structured content
Using headings rather than bold text helps improve readability and accessibility for students using screen readers.

Adding Links, Files, and Media

You can enhance module content by embedding additional resources:
  • Links: Add links to external websites or other Canvas content.
  • Files: Upload or link to documents stored in the module’s Files area.
  • Images and media: Embed images, audio, or video directly into the content.
These tools allow students to access resources without needing to download files unless required.

Using the Content Selector

The Content Selector (located on the right-hand side of the editor) provides quick access to:
  • Pages
  • Assignments
  • Files
  • Media
  • Links to other Canvas content within the module
This helps ensure links remain accurate and reduces the risk of broken links if content is moved or renamed.

Accessibility and the RCE

Canvas includes built-in accessibility features within the Rich Content Editor:
  • The Accessibility Checker highlights potential issues such as missing alt text or poor colour contrast.
  • Instructors can add alternative text to images and use proper heading structures.
  • These tools help ensure content is accessible to all students and aligns with inclusive teaching practices.
