Do I need to share the zoom classroom invitation with students?
Zoom is fully integrated into the
Canvas VLE. This means that all that you will
need to do to begin using Zoom with your
students is access your module on Canvas and
create a Zoom meeting. Access to this meeting
is provided through Canvas, so it should be
visible to all enrolled students, who will be
authenticated through Canvas.
Should I record my lecture?
That is a decision which is being left to
all teaching staff as an individual
choice. While there is no empirical
evidence that recording meetings greatly
reduces attendance, there is no denying
that if there is no “backup” or recording
available to students, they will most
likely make every effort to attend each
live session.
On the other hand, some students may
suffer from connectivity issues and/ or
may genuinely be unable to attend a live
lecture - in which case being able to
access a recording is an essential aid to
their study. Furthermore, the ability to
review recordings of a live lecture can be
a great aid to students in reviewing and
strengthening their learning.
If I record the lecture, how do I share the recordings with students?
If you record your Zoom lecture, it will
be visible to yourself and your students
within Canvas - you should not need to set
anything up yourself.
Should I schedule a recurring meeting or schedule a meeting each week?
There is no substantial difference
between scheduling a meeting each week or
scheduling a recurring meeting if you will
be lecturing the same topic at the same
day and time each week. The only
consideration in this scenario is that it
will be less work for you to schedule a
recurring meeting rather than having to
schedule a meeting each week.
The only other consideration around
scheduling a recurring meeting s that once
a recurring meeting has been scheduled,
you cannot make changes to the options you
have selected. If you will be lecturing at
different times each week or lecturing on
different topics, it may be more suitable
to schedule separate meetings (although
please note that you could schedule
multiple future meetings in one
sitting).
What if I am lecturing to different groups/ classes in the one Canvas module?
If you are teaching to multiple
groups through the same module (i.e. you
are lecturing on a module which has been
crosslisted), and you wish to provide
different lectures to different groups,
you may need to simply try to make this
clear in your titling of your zoom
classrooms (e.g. "LARL1251_1125 - Class
A", "LARL1251_1125 - Class B",
etc.).
