Making your content accessible can make it easier to read, understand and use. You don’t need to fix everything at once, particularly if you are working with older content, but we recommend starting with material that is used frequently.

The following list offers a few of the main ways that you can make your content accessible. Follow the links to learn more about each item.
  • Use properly formatted headings to organise the page
  • Ensure any links have clear and descriptive text
  • Add alt text to meaningful images and mark non-important images as such
  • Ensure adequate colour contrast and don’t rely on colour alone to communicate important information
  • Use correctly formatted tables and lists. Tables should only be used for information that is in clear rows and columns.
  • Make sure any instructions are clear and written in plain language
  • Provide captions and transcripts or other alternatives for multimedia

Finalising your content

Before you publish your content, take a second to think about how someone might be trying to access or understand the content in different ways or with different devices. Would they still be able to get the information they need if they couldn’t see everything on the page clearly, if they couldn’t use a mouse or needed the content read aloud?

You can also use the Web content accessibility checklist as a quick final review.
